Supporting Every Learner, Every Day

Welcome to the Department of Exceptional Students at Sumner County Schools. Serving over 30,000 students across our Tennessee community, we are committed to ensuring that all students with disabilities have access to a high-quality education that meets their unique needs and prepares them for future success.

Our Mission

To provide individualized support and services that empower students with disabilities to achieve their fullest potential in an inclusive, nurturing educational environment.

What We Do

The Special Education Department coordinates a wide range of programs and services designed to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our work includes:

  • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): Developing and implementing personalized learning plans for students with disabilities, ensuring each child receives the services, accommodations, and supports necessary for success.
  • Section 504 Plans: Providing support and accommodations for students with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to ensure equal access to education.
  • Developmental Pre-K Programs: Offering early intervention services through specialized Pre-K classrooms that foster development in speech, motor skills, social-emotional learning, and early academics.
  • School Psychological Services: Our team of school psychologists supports students by conducting assessments, providing counseling, and helping develop strategies for academic and behavioral success.
  • Specialized Instruction and Related Services: Delivering speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, behavioral support, and other services as needed to support students' individual goals.
  • Parent and Family Support Collaborating closely with families to ensure they are informed, involved, and empowered throughout the special education process.
Our Approach

We believe that all students, regardless of ability, deserve to learn in environments that respect their individuality, promote their strengths, and support their needs. Our programs are designed to foster academic achievement, independence, and lifelong success.

Through collaboration with general education teachers, specialized service providers, and families, we work to create inclusive classrooms and school communities where all students can thrive.

Child Find

In compliance with federal and state law, Sumner County Schools actively identifies, locates, and evaluates children who may have disabilities through our Child Find process. If you suspect your child may have a disability, please contact us for assistance.
