TEACH Sumner is a pathway for people who want to become licensed teachers in Sumner County. The program is designed for individuals who are ready to step into the classroom and start teaching while they work toward earning their certification.
Instead of taking classes first and teaching later, participants are hired as full-time classroom teachers in Sumner County Schools right away. This means they gain real classroom experience, working directly with students, colleagues, and school leaders, while also completing the requirements to become fully licensed.
This approach follows Tennessee’s “Grow Your Own” teacher apprenticeship model. The goal of this model is to provide a steady pipeline of new, well-prepared teachers for local schools. By combining on-the-job training with professional development and mentorship, it helps districts address teacher shortages and gives future teachers the support they need to succeed.
TEACH Sumner allows aspiring teachers to learn by doing, while also giving Sumner County students the benefit of having committed, motivated educators leading their classrooms.
