Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute teacher with Sumner County Schools! Our substitute teachers play a vital role in supporting students, staff, and schools each day. We are excited you are considering joining our team and appreciate your willingness to serve our schools.
Basic Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Hold a high school diploma or GED.
Application Review Process
- Applications are reviewed in the order they are received.
- Applying to be a substitute teacher does not guarantee immediate hire, as needs vary throughout the year. The substitute teacher posting may close at any time if staffing needs have been met.
How to Complete Your Application
- Complete each page of the online application.
- Attach official transcripts, if applicable.
- Once your application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email.
You must have a valid email address to create an account and complete your application. The email address you provide will be used for all application updates and next steps, so please ensure it is accurate and checked regularly.
What Happens After You Apply
If your application moves forward, you will receive a series of emails from the Human Resources Department with instructions related to:
- Background checks
- E-Verify +
- Orientation
- Onboarding documents
Please follow all instructions carefully and complete each task promptly to avoid delays.
Final Processing Requirement
After all required tasks are completed, you will schedule your final onboarding appointment with the Human Resources Department at the Sumner County Board of Education.
At this appointment, you must bring:
- Original hard-copy forms of approved I-9 documents that were uploaded to your E-Verify + account, and
- Official college transcripts, if applicable.
This final step must be completed before you are eligible to accept substitute assignments in the system.
Substitute Teacher Pay Rates
Substitute teachers are paid daily rates based on position type. Half-day assignments are paid at exactly one-half of the daily rate.
All degrees and licenses must be documented with the Human Resources Department.
Classified Positions
- $100.00 per day – All substitutes working in classified positions, regardless of degree or license
Certified Positions
- $100.00 per day – Certified position without a degree
- $115.00 per day – Certified position with a bachelor’s degree or higher
- $150.00 per day – Certified position with an active Tennessee teaching license
- $150.00 per day – Certified position for retirees of Sumner County Schools
