Pupil Services

Norma Dam, Assistant Director for Pupil Services, (615) 451-5401

The Pupil Services Department of Sumner County Schools is committed to supporting the students,  parents, and staff in providing a quality educational program for the youth of Sumner County.  Pupil Services is a large, diverse department within the school system and includes Adult Education, Attendance, Nursing, R.T. Fisher Alternative School, and Special Education.

Service Availability

Special education services are available in all schools in Sumner County, including the Union Year-Round School and Merrol Hyde Magnet School, for children meeting the enrollment criteria.  The Sumner County School System does not discriminate against students with disabilities.  An IEP team at the school will meet on an individual basis to determine what services a student needs.

Preschool Information

The Sumner County Board of Education Blended Preschool is a program that offers preschoolers, with and without disabilities, challenging experiences through a language-based curriculum.  The blended preschool classroom is a structured teaching environment where children with special needs and typical peers learn together in a classroom that is staffed by one (1) special education teacher and a minimum of two (2) full-time assistants.  The curriculum is a language-based program emphasizing age-appropriate developmental skills and kindergarten readiness skills.  Emphasis is placed on transitioning from one activity to another, listening and following directions, social skills, and turn-taking and independent self-help skills.

Sumner County does not currently offer the Tennessee Voluntary Pre-K Program.  In Tennessee, preschool-age children are not required to attend public school.  Sumner County has seventeen (17) blended preschool classrooms located across the county.  These classes are special education classes for students ages 3-5, where typically developing peers are placed to serve as role models and peer helpers to the children with special needs.

Children ages 3 and older may also be eligible to receive special education services, such as speech and language therapy based on significant education delays as determined by an IEP Team.  If eligible, the IEP Team would develop and Individual Education Plan (IEP) based on the  individual educational needs of each child.  For additional information, please contact Diane Kail, Childfind Coordinator, at (615) 451-5420.
