Every child who meets the criteria of visual impairment is eligible to receive services from the certified teacher of students with visual impairments (TVI). A TVI provides consultative and direct services as needed for students who are blind or have low vision. Students must meet the state criteria to be certified blind or visually impaired. Impairments with vision means impairment in vision that adversely affects a child's educational performance, even with correction.
Services provided include the following:
- Assessing the child, determining and aiding in adaptations and modifications and providing specialized instruction and overseeing the educational program;
- Assisting in the interpretation of terms and eye conditions and the implications for teaching;
- Ordering enlarged, Braille, or taped materials (if available) to allow participation in classroom activities;
- Referring children to a Low Vision Clinic, when appropriate, for optical aids and training students in the use of those aids;
- Assisting and encouraging the child to become independent; and
- Providing instruction and specific training, when appropriate, in activities of daily living skills, visual skills, visual stimulation, and basic concept development
