Transfer Option for Students Victimized by Violent Crime at School

Under the Tennessee State Board of Education's Unsafe School Choice Policy, any public school student who is the victim of a violent crime as defined under Tennessee Code Annotated 40-38-111(g), or the attempt to commit one of these offenses as defined under Tennessee Code Annotated 39-12-101, shall be provided an opportunity to transfer to another grade-level appropriate school within the district.

Addition information regarding this option may be obtained by contacting Pat Conner, Safe and Drug Free Schools Coordinator, at 451-6500.

Highly Qualified Teachers

No Child Left Behind requires that all teachers hired to teach core academic subjects in a Title I school or program meet certain requirements. In general, teachers must have full certification, a bachelors degree and demonstrated competence in subject knowledge and teaching.

Parents may request information regarding the qualifications of classroom teachers and assistants providing instructional support to their children. Principals will maintain a list of teachers, paraprofessionals and their qualifications.

Adequate Yearly Progress

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is the phrase used to describe progress toward achieving state academic standards. AYP is the minimum level of improvement that state departments of education, school districts and schools must achieve each year.

All groups of students must make the minimum level of improvement each year. Failure of any one group of students may result in a district or school not making Adequate Yearly Progress. The groups of students include economically disadvantaged, Limited English-Proficient, students with disabilities, and five race and ethnic groups.
