Child Find

Diane Kail, Child Find Coordinator (615) 451-5420

Public Awareness And Child-Find For Individuals With Disabilities

Each school system in Tennessee has the responsibility of providing a free and appropriate public education for all certified children with disabilities between the ages of 3 through 21 years of age.  This includes students who are gifted, whose needs cannot be met in the general education program.

If you know of any individual who may have a disability and is not receiving special education services, please call (615) 451-5420.  Diane Kail, the Child Find Coordinator for Sumner County Schools, will be glad to talk with you about possible services.  Early detection and intervention are very important.

If you think your child may have a disability, and your child is between birth and thirty-six months (age 0 to 3 years), please call Tennessee's Early Intervention System (TEIS) toll free number, 1-800-852-7157.  This system will help families locate services for infants and toddlers with disabilities before the child reaches school age.

Special education services are available in all schools in Sumner County, including the Union Year-Round School and Merrol Hyde Magnet School, for children meeting the enrollment criteria.  The Sumner County School System does not discriminate against students with disabilities.  An IEP team at the school will meet on an individual basis to determine what services a student needs.
