The Special Education Department provides support for students, teachers, and staff of the Sumner County Schools. The Assistant Director of Schools for Pupil Services, Special Education Coordinators, Consulting Teachers, School Psychologists, Social Workers, and Therapists are available to provide assistance to teachers, students, and parents. The department practices responsible inclusion in order to assure that all students are placed in the least restrictive environment that can meet their educational needs. Direct special education services are provided to approximately 4,400 students through inclusion, Resource, Extended Resource Class (ERC), Comprehensive Development Class (CDC), and Therapeutic Intervention Program (TIP) classes. The department participates in ongoing collaboration at the classroom, school, departmental, and community levels.
